Hello to everyone, subscribers old and new. Thank you for being part of this weekly journal in which I’ll share my gardening year with you. If you’re new to this, you’ll find out more about me and about what happens week by week here.
Ordering Plants
Now is a good time to order plants to get them in the ground before spring and summer arrives and it gets too warm and dry. If you’re buying a lot of plants in one go it’s often worth looking for a wholesale nursery local to you; they will often sell to individuals if you have a big enough order for them. This is so much cheaper than buying plants from other sources, although you can still buy extras from specialist mail order plant nurseries if you’re looking for something specific. Another more economical way to buy plants is to order bare root perennials, which an increasing number of nurseries are offering now as a more eco-friendly way to supply plants. The time frame is more limited for these though as they need to be lifted and sent out when the plants are dormant, between November and the end of March. You might just be able to buy them now if you’re quick. Alternatively if you need large quantities of plants such as Verbena bonariensis or other fairly common perennials, you can buy jumbo plug plants from a source such as J. Parkers. A few of my favourite UK sources are listed below. If you live in the US, I’d love to hear about your best mail-order sources so I can pass on to others. Meanwhile, this blog by gardeners and designers Enchanted Gardens might be useful.
