Seasonal Planting Series
Many of the garden designers I meet say that they make planting plans but rarely stick to them, and I can completely understand why. When you finally get to the stage of laying everything out ready to plant, you inevitably move things around, thinking about each plant’s relationship to the next and imagining how it will grow in relation to its neighbour. You can do a certain amount of this on paper, but the reality of it is that the design will be tweaked at this stage, when you’re putting the plants together and making a composition with them. But although not strictly necessary, a sketched plan like the one below is useful to give you an idea of how many plants you’ll need, and to consolidate a rough idea of how the plants are going to work together.
