I use pots for seasonal colour, replacing my containers of tulips with summer annuals. Some pots are more permanent, with shrubs and perennials that remain in those pots for several years; but the majority are shortlived, with annual combinations that are planted in spring and come to their peak in summer, to be removed again as they die back in autumn - and replaced once again by tulip bulbs. It’s a seasonal routine that I almost do automatically now. I can’t say I particularly look forward to it as it’s hard physical work removing most of the compost from a pot and then refilling it and replanting. But it signifies the end of one season and the start of another, and for that reason only, it is a satisfying thing to do - clearing out the old and welcoming in the new.
